◆ Analyzing records in a systematic fashion should be the first step in evaluation of the AI program. Percent successful on first service, monthly trends for percent successful on first service, and percent successful stratified by inseminator should be used to evaluate AI technique and fertility level of the herd. ◆ Four general categories are used to classify the factors that determine the ultimate outcome of conception per insemination: 1) female fertility; 2) male fertility; 3) environmental factors; and 4) techniques used in the AI of cattle. ◆ Efficient and accurate detection of estrus that determines the timing of insemination, proper semen handling and thawing procedures combined with deposition of semen in the uterine body are skills that determine the outcome of an AI program.
